In a unique cross-continental debate, students from George Washington University’s Debate & Literary Society and the University of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania will go head-to-head on a critical issue: homelessness in the United States. The debate, scheduled for October 19th at 11 AM ET, will take place online via Google Meet and is open to the public through this link: Google Meet.
The motion under debate is: "Resolved: To achieve housing justice, the United States should focus on the root causes of homelessness rather than focusing on providing immediate permanent housing and supportive services." The George Washington team, consisting of three students, will argue in favor of the resolution, advocating that addressing the underlying issues, such as poverty, mental health, and systemic inequality, is the best path to achieving housing justice. Their counterparts from the University of Dar es Salaam will present the negative case, challenging the idea and likely supporting the provision of immediate housing solutions to address the urgent needs of the homeless population.
This debate will provide a unique opportunity for students from different global contexts to engage on one of the most pressing social issues facing the United States. With Tanzania’s experience in managing housing challenges and GWU's focus on U.S. domestic policy, the perspectives promise to be both diverse and thought-provoking.
The debate will also be an excellent opportunity for the public to witness international academic exchange, with both teams bringing expertise, cultural context, and persuasive arguments to the table.
The event is hosted online and free to join, giving attendees from across the globe the chance to engage in this important conversation. Don't miss out on what promises to be a stimulating and informative debate!
