Former Texas State Senator and businessman Don Huffines has announced his candidacy for Texas Comptroller, following current Comptroller Glenn Hegar's nomination as the sole finalist for chancellor of the Texas A&M University System.
Huffines, a prominent Republican figure, previously served a term in the Texas Senate representing a Dallas district before his defeat in 2018. In 2022, he challenged Governor Greg Abbott in the Republican primary, positioning himself to the right of Abbott and advocating for the abolition of property taxes.
In his announcement for the comptroller race, Huffines pledged to "DOGE Texas by exposing waste, fraud, and abuse in government," aiming to enhance efficiency and allocate savings toward property tax relief. He emphasized his commitment by stating, "I'm committing $10 million to this race on Day 1 because Texas taxpayers deserve a Comptroller who fights for them—and I'm in it to win."
The Texas Comptroller serves as the state's chief financial officer, overseeing Texas's financial health, reporting on the state economy, and enforcing business regulations. With Hegar's anticipated departure, Governor Greg Abbott will appoint an interim comptroller, subject to Senate approval, to serve until the 2026 election.
Huffines' entry into the race is part of a broader reshuffling of Texas' statewide offices, with multiple candidates positioning themselves for the upcoming election cycle.
